Cyclamen is a wonderful perennial plant that has characteristically shaped flowers complete with 5 petals. The beautiful, delicate flowers come in a variety of colours, with pinks and two tone varieties proving very popular. Proper care of your cyclamen will help it last year on year, to ensure your garden is always blooming.
Cyclamen are ideal when planted in a shady spot, both with other hardy plants as well as by themselves. They do well when planted near trees and shrubs, which protect them from frost and wind in the winter months.
Cyclamen prefer well drained soils, which can include sandy or clay soils. Remember that soggy soils are determental to cyclamen so try to keep the soil well drained at all times. A layer of compost or mulch, particularly in summer will give the flowers all the nourishment they need.
Keep deadheading flowers by cutting the stems near the base of the plant.
In the spring, let the soild dry and keep the pot in a dry area of your garden for the duration of summer. The tubers will rest here, and then once you begin watering it again in autumn, place it back in it’s cook, bright area.
